Security is the best-paid track in this campaign and it is surrounded by the most misleading marketing, so the correction comes before the encouragement.
What BLS actually says
BLS assigns a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for information security analysts. Not a bootcamp, not a certification alone. That does not mean nobody gets there without one — plenty do — but "some people do it" and "this is the normal route" are different claims, and an advertisement that blurs them costs the reader a year.
The realistic path from zero, which almost nobody advertises because it is slower and cheaper than what they are selling: get a support or networking job first. Work in it. Get Security+ while employed. Move internally into a security operations role. Let the employer pay for the degree if you end up wanting one.
That route is real, it is common, and it takes years. The route where a twelve-week course produces a $129,180 job does not exist at any meaningful scale, and the people selling it know that.
Why the STEM number cannot tell you where the ladder is

The Congressional Research Service puts it plainly: "Most experts agree that there is no authoritative definition," and estimates of this workforce have "ranged from approximately 6 million to more than 21 million depending on the definition used."
Two examples of what moves the number. Registered nurses are 3,379,720 people and about 9% of NSF's entire STEM workforce — software developers are 5%. And a high school chemistry teacher is inside NSF's STEM workforce, as an "S&E precollege teacher," while BLS counts only 662,890 postsecondary STEM teaching jobs and does not address K-12 at all. Same teacher, same classroom, in one federal agency's count and not the other's.
This is not an argument that nurses or teachers do not matter — both are essential work and this organisation runs campaigns about both. It is an argument that a figure which swings by thirty million depending on who is asked cannot be used to tell a sixteen-year-old where to aim.
And here is the one most likely to be the reader's actual situation. Computer user support specialists — the help desk — are 750,600 people at a median of $61,860. That is 13.6% of the entire computer and mathematical occupation group, paid 43% below that group's own median of $109,280 — and counted inside every BLS STEM definition there is.
So "I work in STEM" and "I am on the technical ladder" are not the same sentence. The help desk is a real job, it is a legitimate first rung, and it is a rung. This campaign is about the rest of the ladder.
What is genuinely true and worth acting on: the demand is real, the growth is real, and the work exists in far more places than technology companies. Hospitals, school districts, county government, utilities, banks and manufacturers all now employ security staff, and several of those will hire from inside rather than from the market.
What is already paid for

- Registered apprenticeships — a wage from the first day, no tuition. apprenticeship.gov.

- Employer tuition reimbursement and certification vouchers — a budget already allocated to you and among the least-claimed benefits in American employment.

Programme names, amounts and deadlines change. These are the doors; verify current terms with the source before counting on a number.
