The first credential is not a degree. It is an exam, and its whole purpose is to get a résumé through an automated screen and into a human's hands. That is a narrow job and it does it well.
What makes this rung unusual: the assessment is knowledge rather than interview performance, the cost is hundreds rather than tens of thousands, and it is very frequently funded — by WIOA, by a VA education benefit, by an employer's certification budget, or by a nonprofit programme.
The realistic timeline is weeks to a few months of study while working. It is not a career change yet. It is the thing that makes the next rung possible, and treating it as the destination is the most common way people stall.
Two cautions worth more than the encouragement
Do not stack credentials instead of applying. Three certifications and no applications is a more common failure than one certification and fifty applications. The credential is a key, not a qualification ladder.
Check what employers near you actually ask for before buying anything. Job postings in your own commuting zone are better evidence than any article, including this one. Search the zone, read twenty postings, and note which credentials repeat.

- Registered apprenticeships — a wage from the first day, no tuition. apprenticeship.gov.
- Pell grants — do not have to be repaid, and most families who qualify never file. studentaid.gov.
- Employer tuition reimbursement and certification vouchers — a budget already allocated to you and among the least-claimed benefits in American employment.
