This is the track people mean when they say "get into tech". It is the hardest one to reach from zero.

Why it is hardest: there is no defined credential. Networking has A+ and Network+; security has Security+; technician work has an associate degree. Software has a portfolio, which is to say it has an assessment that nobody administers, no one certifies, and every employer judges differently.

The Congressional Research Service puts it plainly: "Most experts agree that there is no authoritative definition," and estimates of this workforce have "ranged from approximately 6 million to more than 21 million depending on the definition used."

Registered nurses are 3,379,720 people and about 9% of NSF's entire STEM workforce — software developers are 5%. And a high school chemistry teacher is inside NSF's STEM workforce, as an "S&E precollege teacher," while BLS counts only 662,890 postsecondary STEM teaching jobs and does not address K-12 at all. Same teacher, same classroom, in one federal agency's count and not the other's.

Nursing and teaching are essential work, and both have a home on this site. A figure that swings by thirty million depending on who is asked simply cannot tell a sixteen-year-old where to aim.

And here is the one most likely to be the reader's actual situation. Computer user support specialists, the help desk, are 750,600 people at a median of $61,860. That is 13.6% of the entire computer and mathematical occupation group, paid 43% below that group's own median of $109,280 — and counted inside every BLS STEM definition there is.

So "I work in STEM" and "I am on the technical ladder" are not the same sentence. The help desk is a real job and a legitimate first rung. What follows is the rest of the ladder.

What the route actually is

Learn one language properly rather than four badly. Build three things that solve a real problem and put them somewhere public. Get any job that touches software, quality assurance, support engineering, data entry at a software company, internal tooling, and move sideways from inside. Or take the associate degree route through a community college, which is open enrollment and cheap and puts a credential on a résumé that an automated screen can read.

What is not the route, at any meaningful scale: twelve weeks and a job. That happened at volume in a hiring market that no longer exists, and the advertisements did not update.

The honest framing. Software pays the most and has the least structured entry, so it rewards people who already have time, savings, a network, or a degree in something adjacent. If you have none of those, the fastest route into software is through another track — get paid as a support or networking technician first, then move. That is slower than the advertisement and faster than the advertisement's actual outcome.

And the part that is encouraging rather than promotional: around 280,000 computing openings are projected each year and American institutions award about 122,000 computer science bachelor's degrees. The field is not full. It is badly signposted.
