The branch point

Twelve to twenty-four months in, you choose a direction. This is where the pay curve separates.

A choice, and defaulting is one

A year or two into the first technical job, a choice appears that most people do not realise they are making — and defaulting on it is itself the choice.

The branches are real and they diverge in pay. Networking leads toward network support ($76,220 median) and then the architecture roles above it. Security leads through operations analysis toward information security. Cloud and systems work leads toward administration and platform engineering. Software leads toward development. Data leads toward analysis and engineering.

They are not equally reachable from where you are standing, and they are not equally available in every labour market. A metro with three hospitals and a utility has a different shape from one with a software industry, and pretending otherwise is how people train for a job that does not exist within ninety miles of them.

How to choose it on evidence

Read fifty job postings in your own commuting zone — not nationally. Count which of the five branches appears most. Count which credentials repeat. That is your local market telling you what it will pay for, and it beats every ranking article written for a national audience.

The metro pages exist for exactly this. Each one names the labour market, what its economy runs on, and which branches have employers in it.

One more honest note. This is also the rung where BLS's education assignments start to bind. Several of the jobs on the far side of this branch point, network architect, information security analyst, database administrator, are assigned a bachelor's degree as the typical entry route. You can reach them without one, usually by internal promotion rather than external hire, and it is slower. Knowing that now is worth more than being told later.

The branches diverge in pay and they are not equally available in every labour market. Choose on the evidence of postings in your own commuting zone, not on a national ranking.

This track, seeded in every metro area

A pipeline is not a county-sized thing. The employer, the community college, the training provider and the workforce board are almost never all inside one county line. That is why there is a page for every labour market in the United States as well as every county.

Sources. Occupation employment and wages: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics May 2025 and Employment Projections 2025–35; typical entry-level education assignments from the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Competing STEM definitions and their totals: BLS, Employment and wages for alternate definitions of STEM occupations; NSF NCSES, The State of U.S. Science and Engineering and its glossary, which defines S&E-related occupations as including "S&E precollege teachers"; and Congressional Research Service report R43061, which states that there is no authoritative definition and that estimates have ranged from about 6 million to more than 21 million. All wages on these pages are national medians and are labelled as such — local wages differ, sometimes substantially, and a campaign built on other people's numbers being misleading does not get to imply a local figure it does not have. Labour markets: 2020 Commuting Zones. County economic type and needs classifications: USDA Economic Research Service County Typology Codes. County and metro counts are computed from the committed county file at build time, not asserted.
