Engineering technician work, electrical, electronics, industrial, civil, aerospace, takes an associate degree from a community college, which is open enrollment in every state. The national medians run from $64,950 to $82,890, all well above the $50,980 median for all American jobs, and BLS assigns none of them a bachelor's.

The Congressional Research Service puts it plainly: "Most experts agree that there is no authoritative definition," and estimates of this workforce have "ranged from approximately 6 million to more than 21 million depending on the definition used."

Registered nurses are 3,379,720 people and about 9% of NSF's entire STEM workforce — software developers are 5%. And a high school chemistry teacher is inside NSF's STEM workforce, as an "S&E precollege teacher," while BLS counts only 662,890 postsecondary STEM teaching jobs and does not address K-12 at all. Same teacher, same classroom, in one federal agency's count and not the other's.

Nursing and teaching are essential work, and both have a home on this site. A figure that swings by thirty million depending on who is asked simply cannot tell a sixteen-year-old where to aim.

And here is the one most likely to be the reader's actual situation. Computer user support specialists, the help desk, are 750,600 people at a median of $61,860. That is 13.6% of the entire computer and mathematical occupation group, paid 43% below that group's own median of $109,280 — and counted inside every BLS STEM definition there is.

So "I work in STEM" and "I am on the technical ladder" are not the same sentence. The help desk is a real job and a legitimate first rung. What follows is the rest of the ladder.

Why this track matters more than its profile suggests: it exists where the infrastructure is, not where the cities are. Plants, refineries, utilities, rail, water treatment, manufacturing, aviation maintenance. Software development concentrates into a handful of metros. This does the opposite — it follows the physical economy, which is spread across the whole map.

For someone in one of the 1,960 US counties outside every metro area, that is the difference between a career you can have at home and one that requires leaving.

Adjacent and worth naming: industrial machinery mechanics — 446,900 people, 18% projected growth, median $64,520, and BLS assigns high school diploma plus more than a year of training. In a manufacturing county that is the most reachable well-paid technical job there is, and No Degree Required covers it in full.

Apply to the engineering technology associate degree at your community college. Admission is open enrollment in every state, and the national medians for this work run well above the all-jobs median.
