You already hold the expensive part. Signal, cyber, avionics, network operations, cryptologic work: the schools that teach it run into six figures and you paid for none of it. The clearance came with it.
The rungs, and what each one pays
| Rung | Bottom 10% | Median | Top 10% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information security analyst — where the MOS converts | $75,090 | $129,180 | $199,850+ |
| Software developer — where building starts | $82,460 | $135,980 | $214,670+ |
| Computer and information systems manager | $107,550 | $175,140 | $297,510+ |
US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025. One instrument across all three rows so the columns compare. The table stops at employee. A cleared operator who contracts, consults or builds his own shop is not on it, and this site will not put a number there it cannot source.
You enter at the rung your MOS already matches and climb from there. Each rung up is a certification and a job title, and employers screen on both.
Three benefits do the conversion and two of them have clocks.
SkillBridge puts you inside a private employer for your last 180 days in uniform, on military pay, and a good number of those end in an offer. The GI Bill buys the certifications those employers screen on, not only degrees. VR&E never expires if you were discharged on or after 1 January 2013 with a rating of 10% or more.
Your clearance is live now and starts depreciating the day you stop using it, so the private roles that need one are worth applying for first.

Unemployment and labour force: BLS Employment Situation of Veterans, 2025 annual averages — BLS notes the 2025 figures are 11-month averages excluding October and are not strictly comparable with other years. Federal IT: OPM FedScope, September 2024, via Pew Research Center. Rural: Census Bureau, Veterans in Rural America, 2011–2015 American Community Survey, against the 2010 Census rural share of the total population.
24.1% of veterans live rural against 19.3% of everyone else, and remote technical work reaches every county on this site. See No Class Offered.

What to do this week
Pull your Joint Services Transcript. Run your MOS, rating or AFSC through the O*NET military crosswalk at onetonline.org and write down the civilian titles it returns. Pick the one certification on that list your GI Bill will cover, and book the exam date.
Eight routes. Two expire.
Three you already earned. They wait. Two expire. Read those first.
