A registered apprenticeship pays from day one, raises the wage on a schedule as skills are demonstrated, and ends in a nationally recognised credential. No tuition, no debt, no two-year gap in earnings. For anyone who cannot stop earning in order to learn, this is the only route on the page that solves that rather than working around it.

Technology apprenticeships are newer than the building trades and they are growing, particularly in IT support, networking, cybersecurity and software development. Registered programmes are listed at apprenticeship.gov, and state apprenticeship agencies keep lists that are often more current than the federal one.

Public employers, county and city government, school districts, hospital systems, utilities, transit authorities, all run IT departments, all exist outside the technology corridors, and all are more willing to sponsor than a private firm. And your current employer: a company with an apprenticeship programme in one department can usually start one in another, and the request has to come from somewhere.

Money already exists for this route. It is not a loan and not a competition — it has eligibility rules, an office and an intake appointment.
