Open, but nobody has to teach you
Community colleges admit anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent. No selection, no rejection letter, no requirement to be qualified before you arrive. For an adult already working, or a student whose high school offered one computer science course taught by someone covering it as an extra period, this is the front door.
It is stronger than its reputation. The certificate, not only the degree: one or two semesters, and in several technical fields it is what employers actually screen on. And the transfer agreement — most states guarantee that specified community college credits transfer into the public four-year system, which turns two cheap years into half of a bachelor's degree.
Money: Pell grants do not have to be repaid, and a large number of families who qualify never file the form. Many states now fund community college tuition outright for residents. Ask the financial aid office what the actual out-of-pocket number is before deciding it is unaffordable — the sticker price and the paid price are rarely the same number.
Anyone may walk in. No one is obliged to instruct you, follow up with you, or notice when you stop.
