Oregon does not require it

Oregon is one of thirty-nine states with no computer science graduation requirement, so whether the course exists in any given Oregon school is a district decision made locally, one catalog at a time.

Nationally, 40% of public high schools offer no foundational computer science at all — more than 10,000 schools. In states that adopted a requirement, access rose around 18%. This is the measured size of the rule Oregon has not adopted.

The seven routes below do not wait for that to change, and every one of them operates in Oregon today.

What non-metropolitan means for Oregon

21 of Oregon's 36 counties sit outside every metropolitan area. 1 have lost population across each of the last two censuses, which is the condition that drives school consolidation.

Small schools do not decline to offer computer science out of indifference. A graduating class of forty cannot fill an elective, and a school with four teachers cannot assign one of them to a subject none of them was trained in. This is a staffing and scale problem, and dual enrollment, the regional career centre and online sections exist because it cannot be solved inside the building.

What Oregon runs on

Of 36 counties, the most common economic types are tourism and recreation (9), government (6), farming (5). That decides which route is realistic. Where the employers are hospitality, food service and seasonal trades, the technical work that already exists locally is maintenance, logistics and systems that keep those operations running — which is a more reachable first job than a software role. It is a real one.
