Self-efficacy is the research term for "I am certain I can master math skills." 71% of students agree, and it carries a 12-point lift in STEM majors.

39% of girls in the national study called themselves math people. The rest grew up. This is for them too.

Start here: one problem

A first name or nickname is all we ask for. No email, no last name, no birthday. For a child under 13, a parent or teacher signs up and sits beside them.

In 2012 NSF asked eleventh graders whether they agreed with “I see myself as a math person.” 44% did. In 2016, 43% of those who agreed were STEM majors, against 31% of those who disagreed.

Among Female students: 39% agreed; 40% of those who agreed became STEM majors, against 31% of those who disagreed.

Being seen counts as much as seeing it yourself: for “Others see me as a math person.” the figures are 43% and 30%. Test confidence is more common (65% have it) and weaker: 39% against 31%.

How it works

  1. Prove it. Pick a level from 1 to 5 and solve one problem. The server grades it. A wrong answer costs nothing and nobody sees it; the next problem is new.
  2. Get seen. You get a link. Send it to someone who has watched you work: a parent, a teacher, a coach, a friend. They open it, see your proof, and say “I see a math person.”
  3. Claim it. After a proof and a witness, the sentence is yours to say, and the badge with it.
  4. Pass it on. Everyone who opens your link is invited to prove their own. Each one who does is on your chain, and their chain is on yours.

Because in the national data a claim with nothing behind it does not move anything. Here the claim unlocks after one graded proof and one witness, so the sentence means what it says.

What do I get for sharing my link?

2 points for each new person who opens it, 40 when someone joins through it and solves their own proof, 20, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 for the generations below them, and 20 more when someone you brought in reaches their own claim. The Share badges run from 1 recruit to 81 and from a chain 2 deep to 13 deep.

The study shows that the identity came first and the major followed; it was not an experiment. This campaign asks its members the same four identity questions every 30 days so its own results can be set beside the national ones.
