A window that closes
SkillBridge places transitioning service members into civilian industry training, apprenticeships and internships during their final months of service. The Department of Defense states the eligibility plainly: participants must have "180 days or fewer of service remaining prior to their date of military discharge."
That is the whole opportunity and the whole problem. It is arguably the best transition programme the federal government runs, and it exists inside a window that opens once and closes permanently. A great many people hear about it at the transition briefing, which is frequently later than the point at which they should have been applying.
Participation is during the last 180 days of service, with up to 180 days of permissive duty, and it requires unit commander approval — which is the part that actually decides whether it happens. A commander who is short-handed can say no. Ask early, ask in writing, and ask before you are inside the window rather than at the start of it.

This route has a deadline tied to your separation date or to limited annual capacity. It is not something to look at later — later is frequently the point at which it stops being available.
