A window that closes
SkillBridge puts you inside a civilian company before you separate. You keep your pay. You keep your benefits. You learn the job you are about to apply for.
The rule is one line. You need 180 days or fewer left before your discharge date.
That window opens once. It does not reopen.
Most people first hear about SkillBridge at their transition briefing. By then the good host companies are booked.
Your commander has to sign off. A short-handed unit can say no. Ask early. Ask in writing. Ask before you hit the window.
Technology companies host more SkillBridge fellows than almost any other sector. Start at skillbridge.osd.mil.
More than a year out? Put your 180-day date in a calendar right now. Then talk to your command six months before that.
This one has a deadline. Your separation date sets it, or an annual cap does. Later is usually too late.
