What the work is worth. Antibiotic resistance, food safety, and the next pandemic are microbiology problems. Microbiologists see the threat before it is visible.
An ordinary day. Study bacteria, viruses, and fungi; culture and identify organisms; test antimicrobials; support food safety, medicine, and environmental work.
The path in. Bachelor's for lab roles; doctorate for independent research.

The personality behind the work
- Meticulousness. You record exact notes and follow strict procedures without being told to.
- Detail Orientation. You remember complex facts and catch small errors before they become large ones.
- Patience. You accept that real proof takes months or years of testing, and you can wait for it.
- Inquiry. You ask deep questions about how the natural world works and you keep asking.
- Skepticism. You question whether the data is accurate, complete, or biased before you trust any conclusion.
- Persistence. You keep going through hours of troubleshooting. A problem that refuses to yield is a reason to stay, not a reason to leave.
- Curiosity. You want to find the hidden pattern in raw numbers. A pile of data is a mystery you want to solve.
