What the work is worth. Hospitals, school districts, and water utilities have all been shut down by attacks. A security analyst is the difference between a bad day and a closed hospital.
An ordinary day. Monitor for intrusions, investigate alerts, patch vulnerabilities, test defenses, respond to incidents, and train people not to be the weak link.
The path in. Bachelor's in computer science or cybersecurity; certifications such as Security+ and CISSP are common entry and advancement markers.
From zero. The STEM Farm Cybersecurity / Compliance / Risk track starts at zero-STEM intake and ends in this kind of work, with verified proof at every gate.

STEM pathway aptitude test. Aptitude tests measure what you can do under a clock. STEM Compass measures what you would keep doing on a Saturday with nobody watching — the enjoyment that turns into skill. A pathway has a start, a direction and a destination. The assessment gives the direction; the career pages give the destination; the STEM Farm track gives the start.
Information Security Analyst and the Lyon County economy

The personality behind the work
- Skepticism. You question whether the data is accurate, complete, or biased before you trust any conclusion.
- Composure. You stay calm and clear-headed when the situation is urgent and other people are not.
- Persistence. You keep going through hours of troubleshooting. A problem that refuses to yield is a reason to stay, not a reason to leave.
- Detail Orientation. You remember complex facts and catch small errors before they become large ones.
- Adaptability. New tools, new languages, new rules do not throw you. You expect the ground to move and you enjoy relearning.
- Abstract & Systems Thinking. You can hold an invisible system in your head — logic flows, data moving between parts, cause and effect you cannot see.
- Meticulousness. You record exact notes and follow strict procedures without being told to.
