What the work is worth. Programmers turn plans into running systems. The role is being absorbed into broader developer work, which is why it is shrinking — the skill itself is more in demand than ever.
An ordinary day. Write, test, and maintain code to specifications produced by developers and engineers; convert designs into working programs.
The path in. Bachelor's in computer science is typical; certifications in specific languages help.
From zero. The STEM Farm Software / Web / QA / Automation track starts at zero-STEM intake and ends in this kind of work, with verified proof at every gate.

Computer Programmer and the Somerset County economy
Somerset County is nonspecialized in the USDA ERS 2025 typology — no single industry dominates, flagged for housing stress, a metro county. Its labor market is the Newark, NJ commuting zone (11 counties), MSA rank #1. By local economy, computer programmer ranks #19 of forty for this county.
The personality behind the work
- Persistence. You keep going through hours of troubleshooting. A problem that refuses to yield is a reason to stay, not a reason to leave.
- Detail Orientation. You remember complex facts and catch small errors before they become large ones.
- Abstract & Systems Thinking. You can hold an invisible system in your head — logic flows, data moving between parts, cause and effect you cannot see.
- Meticulousness. You record exact notes and follow strict procedures without being told to.
- Adaptability. New tools, new languages, new rules do not throw you. You expect the ground to move and you enjoy relearning.
