What the work is worth. Nearly every service people use — banking, medicine, schooling, transport — runs on software someone built and maintains. A developer decides how millions of people experience those systems.
An ordinary day. Design features, write and review code, debug what broke overnight, and ship improvements in short cycles with a team.
The path in. Bachelor's in computer science or a related field; strong portfolios and bootcamp routes also open doors.
From zero. The STEM Farm Software / Web / QA / Automation track starts at zero-STEM intake and ends in this kind of work, with verified proof at every gate.

Computer science career personality test for students. Personality is not a type; it is a profile on fifteen traits. The assessment reports yours and shows exactly which trait carried each match and which would stretch you. Computer science splits into software, systems, security and research the moment you leave school. Each rewards a different balance of persistence, abstraction, detail and adaptability. Students choose classes, majors and programs years before they meet the daily work of a career; this shows the ordinary day first.
Software Developer and the Shasta County economy
Shasta County is nonspecialized in the USDA ERS 2025 typology — no single industry dominates, flagged for housing stress, a metro county. Its labor market is the Redding, CA commuting zone (5 counties), MSA rank #249. By local economy, software developer ranks #6 of forty for this county.
The personality behind the work
- Persistence. You keep going through hours of troubleshooting. A problem that refuses to yield is a reason to stay, not a reason to leave.
- Abstract & Systems Thinking. You can hold an invisible system in your head — logic flows, data moving between parts, cause and effect you cannot see.
- Adaptability. New tools, new languages, new rules do not throw you. You expect the ground to move and you enjoy relearning.
- Detail Orientation. You remember complex facts and catch small errors before they become large ones.
- Collaboration. You work well inside large teams with strict deadlines and shared ownership.
- Ambiguity Tolerance. You are comfortable starting without a clear map. Open-ended problems energize you.
- Practicality. You are drawn to building functional things — physical or digital — that work in the real world.
