The labour market you can actually reach
The Census places Lea County in the Hobbs, NM commuting zone — the federal measure of where people who live here actually work. That is wider than the county line, and it is the area worth applying across rather than only where you sleep.
Who hires here
The USDA classifies Lea County as mining and energy-dependent. In practice that means extraction, pipeline, field services and heavy equipment. Energy and extraction pay well above local median and hire on capability. Safety certifications matter far more than background here, though some roles require a clean commercial driving record.
The thing most people do not know
Pell Grant eligibility was restored for people with felony convictions, including those still incarcerated. If you were told years ago that a conviction disqualified you from federal student aid, that information is out of date. File the FAFSA at studentaid.gov — it is free, and a drug conviction no longer blocks eligibility either.
The second thing: the Federal Bonding Program gives an employer a free fidelity bond to cover the risk of hiring you, and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit pays them up to $2,400 for doing it. Both exist to make you the cheaper hire. Most applicants never mention either one.
