You can work at 17. There are limits on hours and on which jobs, and they are federal so they are the same in every state — your state can be stricter, never looser. Here is the whole picture, and then the part that matters more than the job listings.
What federal law allows at 17
- No federal hour limits.
- Hazardous-occupation rules still apply until 18, with apprenticeship and student-learner exemptions.
- This is the year to start an apprenticeship so you are earning journeyman-track wages at 21.
What you can do at 17
- any non-hazardous job, unlimited hours
- registered apprenticeship in most trades
- Job Corps
- dual-enrollment certificate programs — finish high school already credentialed
- military enlistment at 17 with parental consent
What is off limits until you are older
- hazardous occupations, unless under a registered apprenticeship or student-learner exemption
- CDL interstate driving until 21; intrastate at 18 in most states

The part almost nobody is told
Federal law funds paid work experience, tutoring and job training for young people starting at age 14 and running to 24. It is called the WIOA youth program, every county in the country is covered by a board that runs it, and the money is already appropriated whether or not anyone claims it.
