The gap, locally
The Pittsburgh, PA area has lost population since 2020 — down 1.4%, about 35,008 people. That makes Pittsburgh a different problem from the boom metros, and it deserves to be said plainly: housing here is comparatively affordable, and what left was opportunity. Young people move away because the pathway to a family-sustaining wage is not visible from where they stand — not because the jobs are gone. Pennsylvania employers report unfilled STEM and skilled-trade roles right now. Making that pathway visible and funded is what keeps talent home.
